Hi Everyone! I’m so happy to be writing to all of you today. 🙂 I just started decorating our mantel this weekend for fall and I wanted to share it with all of you. I also want to offer you the print I created for Free!! Yippee!! 😉
I’ve been seeing in magazines and on Pinterest people creating these super cute chalkboard prints and putting them in frames on their mantels or in their entry ways. I looked around at Fall sayings and this one , Autumn the year’s Last loveliest smile, was my favorite. So I downloaded a chalkboard background and fonts and went to creating. I wanted it big for the mantel so I chose a 18×24 size. When it was just the words I felt like it was missing something so I put some leaf branches on the sides and loved it! I love the way this print turned out and would love to share it with all of you. You can get it HERE Because of it’s size you will have to have it printed somewhere like Staples. But guess what I discovered?!?!?!
You can print in black and white at Staples as an engineering print for only $1.83 I couldn’t believe it because most times prints can get very expensive! So, I went to their website and sure enough you can upload a print from your computer onto their website and it’s done within a day or so for only $1.83! Awesome!! Now, for this price you have to get the 18×24 size. If you do a larger print it still doesn’t go any higher that $5 I believe. This print, because it’s on engineering paper, is very thin. So in order for it to go well into my frame I glued the ends to poster foam board. I didn’t want any glue marks in the middle of my print so I just did the ends. The print fit perfectly into the frame! I was so excited!!
The frame I bought at Michaels craft store. Right now their frames are 50% off. With out the discount their frames can get pricey. Originally it was a $50 frame. I still didn’t want to spend $25 so as I was standing in the frame isle at Michaels frowning over prices I thought to myself, I can make my own frame for half the price by using crown molding. So like the silly little craft person that I am I hop over to Home Depot to buy myself some crown molding not having a clue what I was getting myself into! Picture me in the crown molding isle just perusing the molding until I found the one I liked. They were super cheap (or so I thought). I picked one out that was only $1.50!! Boy was I going to make an awesome cheap frame! Beat that Michaels! They come in long boards so you can only imagine this tall blonde carrying her long molding to the register. At check out the lady rang me up for $35!! What?!?! My board is only $1.50….a FOOT!! Oh good grief!! I felt myself turning red. So I said I’d just take it back. On my way back I thought I’ll just cut off what I need. So there I am in the back of Home Depot with a measuring tape measuring for my 18×24 frame and then cutting off what I needed with a handsaw. Men would walk by asking if I needed help. No No No…. I got this, thanks!! Lol!! Once I got it cut and back to the front I believe it cost about $18. That was better than $35 so I went home to wait for my husband to get home to make my awesome frame.
As Joe and I are cutting the boards for this awesome frame we quickly realize that we need a different saw for this project. It just isn’t cutting smooth and the edges weren’t aligning just right. My husband said that we could just sand the edges down to get them to match up… let’s just say it was the saddest frame I’ve ever seen. And I did all of this to save $7 in the end. I let my sad frame sit there for a few days not knowing if I was going to try to fix it or just go get the pretty frame for $25 over at Michaels. Well, guess what I did? Yeap, I bought the frame! When my husband came home from work that day and he saw the frame and print on the mantle he smiled and said, “Good choice Babe!!” We had a good laugh over the experience. I love my new frame and am going to think twice next time I think that I can make something better than the professionals. 🙂 Maybe one day I can give you a tutorial on how to make a frame, but not today. 😉
You can find my print HERE to download and have printed.
I hope that you download my print and create a beautiful Autumn space in your home or office too.
Have a blessed week everyone. 🙂
